Tyler the Creator
Goblin (XL Recordings)
In today’s climate of hustle and flow materialism, it’s nearly unheard of for an independent rap group that thrives on shock value to snatch the cover of a major magazine. Such is the case with OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). The young California collective snagged the cover of Billboard, as well as an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Goblin, from frontman Tyler the Creator, rides the wave built by the groups’ previous releases.
A wickedly depraved listen from start to finish, Goblin boasts such gems as, “I’m shovin’ blunt wraps in bitches ovaries/punches to the stomach where that bastard kid supposed to be” (“Sandwitches”). The chaos continues on “Radicals” (“kill people, burn shit, fuck school” he chants), where Tyler encourages listeners to “not do anything I say on this song” on the opening disclaimer. OFWGKTA’s resident crooner, Frank Ocean, pops up for “She,” which shows off a (not-so-) softer side. Masturbation, drugs, violence, Jesus and even skateboarding are all fair game on this 15-track wild ride through the imaginative mind of a 20-year-old.
Goblin ultimately succeeds because Tyler floats effortlessly between two extremes: convincing you that he’s truly crazy while reminding you not to take him seriously. ANTHONY SPRINGER, JR.
